Baking Soda Gender Test

Being pregnant is one of those magically moments in life that brings on excitement and curiosity for many women and men. There always seems to be endless questions running through the minds of soon to be parents. Probably the biggest question is whether the child will be a boy or girl. When pregnant, I remember being asked, what seems like countless times, “Do you know if you’re having a boy or girl?”. We actually found out our girl’s gender when we had a sonogram, but obviously not everyone chooses that path. If you search the internet, there are many home methods that are believed to determine gender that do not involve having a sonogram and professional sonographer carted into your home. One of those methods is the Baking Soda Gender Test.

Baking Soda Gender Test Instructions

The test is very simple to execute and you don’t need to be a chemist to figure it out.

Step one: Grab a clear cup, fresh baking soda, and a tablespoon. The cup will hold your urine for the test so you will potentially want to use one that you can dispose of. Something like a 12 to 16-ounce clear plastic cup will work fine.

Step two: Add two tablespoons of baking soda to the bottom of the glass. Use newly purchased baking soda to ensure the test works properly. You definitely do not want to use it if it has been sitting in the refrigerator as a deodorizer.

Step three: Fill the cup with urine about 4 fluid ounces (see the photo below). It doesn’t have to be exact, but somewhere between 1/3 cup to 1/2 cup will work. It should be enough to cover the baking soda.

Step four: View the reaction with the baking soda and urine combination (if any). The urine should fizz immediately when it touches the baking soda if it is going to fizz at all.

How do you supposedly tell if it is a boy or girl based on this test? It is believed that if the urine/baking soda mixture bubbles or fizzes it is a boy and if no reaction then it is a girl. The reaction (or lack thereof) is said to be based on the hormones of the mother that alter the urine in  different ways if she is having a boy vs. a girl.

Is the Baking soda Gender Test Accurate?

If a gender test were so easy and accurate, this method would likely be known and practiced throughout the world. However, there are people who wholeheartedly stand by this test as if it were an exact science. Others claim it is mostly accurate, but not something that they would necessarily trust. There are women have supposedly taken the test various times during pregnancy and have had the urine fizz and not fizz at different times. You have to question those results. If you ask me, the test results are likely based on what a woman’s body happens to be eliminating from foods/drinks, rather than from a woman’s hormones based on a boy or girl.
